He recently moved to Asia with his wife and daughters. I have met people who have traveled to more countries than I, but in almost every case, it seems, they have flown from one place to another. You have not really been to a country, I believe, until you have had to cross the border physically, had to find food on your own, fuel, a place to sleep, until you have experienced it close to the ground. This book is really a great escape because Rogers takes you around the world and makes sure to describe all the unique traits of each region. I particularly like how he was not doing simply touristy things but also living with the locals there. He is definitely quite brave for driving through war zones and jumping through all sorts of hoops through out his trip. His little bits of history are also interesting but sometimes lengthy. I didn’t take this book too seriously – it was a fun romp about a guy driving around the world, giving his take on things. I’d like to know what “sure thing” investments he’s made in today’s market and how much his impressions may have changed since this book was published.

Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip

Although sometimes it seems he aims a wannabe Hollywood story exaggerating some events, it’s an interesting forex analytics road trip book to read. About 10 years old, but a really fun read about a cool trip around the world.

Global Entrepreneur

There is a clear parallel between eleanors life and abigails. She was rather a favorite with old davis, as, of course, he was called, and its my private belief that he would have broken his word if the indignation of one irrepressible young lady had not found vent in a hiss. They are bound by their institutional symbolism and tied together for a larger significance. one day my friend Patrick McKenna (Vice President of LiveOps — one of the hottest young companies in Palo Alto) suggested I read this book. Patrick had read Investment Biker, the book Rogers had written 10 years prior when he did a similar trip with his motorcycle. Jim Rogerscofounded The Quantum Fund and retired at age thirty-seven.

Since then, he has served as a sometime professor of finance at Columbia University’s business school and as a media commentator worldwide. In 2007, he moved his family to Singapore in order to be at the epicenter of the new financial world order. He is the author of Investment Biker, Adventure Capitalist, Hot Commodities, A Gift to My Children, and A Bull in China. Perhaps a bit dated now, but still fun and educational to read. Entertaining read on travel, cultures, and investment. At times, Rogers sounds a bit too pretentious to my taste, but the fantastic content overwhelms that downside entirely. It wasn’t a terrible book, nor was it a great book. While his views on the various countries were interesting, I was hoping he would go in depth a bit more about them.

The trip would be both an adventure and a part of the continuing education I had been engaged in all my life, from rural Demopolis, Alabama, where I grew up, through Yale, Oxford, and the U.S. Army, and eventually to Wall Street, where experience taught me that the “experts” were usually wrong. My travels tended trading strategy to be characterized by the slaughter of sacred cows, the puncturing of various balloons, and the laying to rest of preconceptions of the world held by certain “authorities,” many of whom rarely left home. My success in the market has been predicated on viewing the world from a different perspective.

Furthermore, besides the corruption of leaders of other countries, there is the sadly the corruption of our own officials in particular Africa. Our tax monies are being spent on their Mercedes, security guards, and flying in people for conferences – conferences to find ways to spend the money wisely and to get even more. I enjoyed reading the book and Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip someone who likes the travel and investment genre will like it. But if you are purely looking for inspiration on world travel and overland adventure, look elsewhere. Behind the wheel of a sunburst-yellow, custom-built convertible Mercedes, Rogers and his fiancée, Paige Parker, began their “Millennium Adventure” on January 1, 1999, from Iceland.

  • I ENTERED THE INVESTMENT BUSINESS in 1968 with six hundred dollars in my pocket, and I left it in 1980, at the age of thirty-seven, with enough money to satisfy a lifelong yearning for adventure.
  • Finding promising investment opportunities was not a defined aim of the trip, but just because I am who I am, it is something that happens when I travel.
  • As an investor, I would seek to learn about the markets in China, Africa, and South America, and I would visit promising stock exchanges whenever possible.

This is a multi-millionaire and while investing was one of the major reasons to go on this trip, he wants to also experience life – life as the locals live it. The list of local delicacies he ate at each country is too long to list. Though I do wonder why he ate at Applebee’s in Tucson; Applebee’s is considered local cuisine. In all, I liked that the book mixed his adventure travel with investing insights. I’ll admit this is a partial review- I got about a quarter way into the book and then quit, it was so bad.

It’s interesting to read his thoughts regarding culture and future of visited countries. 20 years after the expedition we can say he was right in almost all his visions.

I met Paige in 1996 during a speaking engagement at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Paige, a fund-raiser at Queens College, had read my book on the recommendation of Billy Wireman, the college president, and come to hear me speak about my motorcycle trip. I tracked her down the next day and invited her to dinner.

The book is rather fast paced but honestly humorous. Some of the best parts of the book are getting a ground eye view of other countries and selling me the idea of going somewhere bolder for my next vacation. Foreign exchange reserves Read this in 2020 and many of the observations still seem relevant. A great travel book with a lot to learn from it especially the importance of adventure. I read it while traveling one summer at University.

He does the same for places many have never even known existed. His is not the tourist view, but the genuine article with both the roses and the thorns carefully examined. As in his earlier classic, “Investment Biker,” you may even get a few investment ideas, but Rogers never tells you what to do or not do. Rather he clears away the smoke, reveals the true picture, and lets you make your own decisions. Along the way he also gives the careful reader deep insights into who he is and what he believes. There is much depth here for those who can understand, and it adds greatly to the authenticity of the narrative he relates.

Each city had access to an increasing amount of capital and sustained wealth was created. No one nation has ever monopolised economic prosperity and Jim realises that. He thinks kids in school should learn Chinese or Spanish and stresses the importance of education for people to remain competitive in a global economy. He candidly describes the customs and the points out the bureaucracy and corruption of the world. Particularly he hates the idea of foreign aid to countries. Foreign aid in a country just creates a generation that learns how to live in a welfare state.

Demonstrates that adventure is available to anyone with the right mindset regardless of age. He gets quite repetitive and lengthy so you may need to take a break every once in a while or you will lose interest.

Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip

It is simply incredible to think that Jim actually drove to every single crevice our planet offers. I know Jim as one of the most brilliant investors of all times. It would therefore be expected that he would write about business. A fun listen while doing a much, much smaller scale road trip myself. The author shares his impressions of the various countries he visited with no hesitation. I like the style even though it is just one man’s inevitably biased account.

Money Masters Of Our Time

I really liked this book, a great mix of a travel-log and economic and political commentary. As a former hedge fund investor Jim Rogers provides some fascinating insights on countries’ economies and situations having traveled to them himself on the ground. Particularly interesting were his travels across all of Russia, the continent of Africa and some comments on South America as well.
